ID-4100 Cannot select memory channels and screen is blank

Other than the very obvious... you "let the smoke out", let's talk here about functionality of a live radio.

The Icom ID-4100, and possibly others, has banks. This radio will let you select an empty bank. Once done, the radio appears to be inoperable for memory channel mode. Turning knobs or buttons yields little if any response from the radio.

This condition is really easy to get into and just as easy to get out of.
  1. The radio was put into this state through button presses from the radio's face. The selector knob (the large one at the left) not only selects memory channels but it also selects a bank.
  2. If pressed, the bank selection list appears on the face of the radio. Turn it again and the selection indicator will move to a bank. Press it again and you are now in that bank.
  3. If there are no channels in that bank, the face of the radio appears blank other than a decimal about at the center. An indication of MR (a bank letter) and a number appear at the lower right... but that bank number is really small and can easily be read as an additional number... so you wonder where your memory channels went.
  4. Knobs and buttons seem to cease to work at this point... other than the radio can be changed to DR mode and that all works.
  5. No fear... no problem. This is a normal state of the radio.
  6. To exit and return to normal memory channel operations, just reverse the process.
  7. Press the knob on the left. When the list appears, select Off. Press the knob again.
This will get you back to normal operations on your memory channels.
