There are all sorts of cables available today. If you get one from the manufacturer with the radio, it should work for programming the radio... at least you would think the manufacturer would send the right cable... IF it is compatible with the operating system of your computer... we are still seeing cables come with new radios that are not.
But if you don't have a cable. How do you choose one to use from all those available. Sure it's great to get one for a small price... but is it work it if it does not work. It may be worth the try.
The RT Systems programmers have com port setup. As long as you can find and load the drivers for the electronics of the cable that you procured, you can assign that com port in the programmer. That takes care of the computer end and IF the wiring and electronics are right for your radio, the cable with work with the programmer.
