UV-16/UV-16M: Which radio do I have

Modified on Sat, Oct 26 at 10:27 AM

First of all, the Baofeng UV-16 has been around for a number of years. If you have had your radio for a while, it is more than likely an original UV-16 or UV-16 Pro Mate (No, I don't know the exact differences nor do I have a photo of the Pro Mate, but those two use the same software for programming).

The UV-16M is more recent than the original. It is also a tri-band radio according to the label under the battery. So, there is different programming software to address its uniqueness.

While the faces of the two radios are similar, the displays tell the difference.

This is a photo of the original UV-16. This radio uses the BAO-UV16 Programmer. Click here for the programmer.

Notice the differences in the displays.  While both have dual displays, that of the new UV-16M is much larger and more colorful.

If this is not enough information for you to tell the difference, let's look under the battery

This is the label on the original UV-16.  Notice the frequencies include only 2M and 440MHz.

This is the label on the new UV-16M.  Notice the "M" as a clear part of the radio identifier and the frequencies of 2M, 220MHz and 440MHz.

Know that what you're getting is designed to address all the options of your particular radio.  The programming cable is optional. If you have one that is working with the radio, it will work with the RT Systems Programmer. Just set up the com port as part of the Communications process.

Another new one with a very similar number.  Anything to make things a tad confusing.  If you still have questions about which you need, give a call for personal help.
