"The device does not recognize the command" error message.

This is interesting. If you see this error message while getting or sending data to your radio please understand that it is not an issue with your RT Systems software. Rather, it is most likely an issue with the computer you are using. We'll explain how to troubleshoot the problem so that you can get back to radio programming.

The first thing you will want to do is open your Windows Device Manager. You'll be looking for any "broken" devices with a yellow triangle error icon on them. They'll usually be found in the category called "Other Devices" but it is worth checking other categories as well to be safe. Generally speaking you do not want to see the "Other Devices" category at all, as devices located there are usually not functioning correctly for one reason or another.

What we are looking for specifically are any devices with  "PCI" in the name. If you find a "PCI" device with the yellow error triangle then you've found the problem. PCI here stands for "Peripheral Component Interconnect" and you can think of it as the pathway that all connected hardware uses to talk to your computer's CPU. Conversely, it is also the path that the CPU uses to talk to any connected hardware.

You might see where this is going now. If the PCI bus in your computer is not functioning correctly then the CPU in your computer won't be able to address things correctly. It will send bogus commands that the device will not recognize. Hence the error message. All things flow through your CPU and it must be able to talk to the computer's constituent components accurately.

What is the fix then? The best and easiest thing to try is to simply right click on the broken PCI device and select "update drivers." From there tell it to search for drivers automatically. If this works and the error triangle goes away then go back to your RT Systems programmer and try to have it communicate with the radio again. We expect success.

If the above fix does not work then things become more complex. You'll need to determine what CPU chipset your computer is using and manually locate the resources you need to get it working correctly. This goes beyond the scope of the support RT Systems is able to provide. If you reach this point in the process and need assistance you will want to reach out to the manufacturer of your CPU. This will almost always be either Intel or AMD for Windows computers.
