Using a Micro SD card to program the FTM-400

The YPS-M400 Radio Programmer for the Yaesu FTM-400

Getting the Initial Details from the Radio

Programming the Yaesu FTM-400 radio begins with getting data from the radio to give the Programmer identifying information it needs. What is retrieved in this process is modification status, world wide version (American, European, South American, etc) and other information about the radio that can only be retrieved from it.

This will be your first experience working with the SD card and the data transfer process on this radio. These steps will help you through that process

Press and hold for 1 second the [DISP/SETUP] key
on the face of the radio to access the menu

FT-3D_SD-Card

From the menu, select SD card.

There are several reasons that this option may not be active.

  • The SD card has not been inserted into the slot on the radio.
  • The SD card was not inserted properly into the slot (upside down / not inserted all the way)
The SD card goes into the slot with the teeth up (the little gold strips.)
  • The SD card may not be formatted properly for this device. This is especially true if you are using a card that has been used in other devices.
Remember, if you initialize the SD card in the radio, everything on the SD card will be erased.
  • If the SD Card icon does not become active after several attempts of removing, cleaning and re-seating the card in the radio, you might need to try a different card. The radio works best with a Class 4 card, however, some Class 10 cards will work. (Note: Class pertains to the speed of the card.) The Class 10 cards may be too fast for the radio, but some will work. Try another from those around your house (from cameras and other devices) until you find one that does. Or order a car specifying Class 4. RT Systems has a limited number of these available.
FT-3D_SD-Card

Select Backup from the SD card menu.

You are still in control. There are still two more questions to answer to begin the process.

FT-3D-DISP

Select Write to SD

This will transfer all the details of your radio to the SD card. Even in a new radio there are details that the Programmer needs to identify your radio.

FT-2D-Setup-Menu

Select ALL

FT-2D-Setup-Menu

Click OK to complete the process.

The process takes only a matter of seconds to complete.

FT-3D-Write-to-card

Remove the SD card from the radio.

Press and release the SD card gently to release it from the radio. The SD card will be ejected a little way making it much easier to grasp.

Insert the SD card into a reader for use in the computer.

Start the ADMS-M400 Programmer

The program opens in a default file.

If you have been working in the Programmer and it opens to the file you saved with memory channel details, do File | New before proceeding to the next step.

FTM-400-Main-Screen

Select Communications | Read Data from SD card

from the menu at the top of the screen

The program will find the SD card automatically and let you know it is reading the details from it.

The Read data from SD card takes only a matter of seconds.

The screen may not change when the process is completed if you are working with a new radio.

FTM-400-Read-from-SD-Card

Leave the SD card in place in the computer and edit your file.

First:  Capture your call sign

To do this, click Settings | Radio Menu Settings in the menu at the top of the screen.

When the settings screen opens, enter your callsign in the Callsign field.

Save the settings file before you close it to make this change permanent.

Note: Once you get this done, you won't have to be concerned about entering your callsign again when you create a new file for programming the radio.

Make changes to the memory channels for Band A (top) and Band B (bottom), Limit memories, and Home channels for the radio.

Access each on the tab at the bottom of the page.

Note: You are in complete control of where in the radio the channel information goes.

FT-3d-Readfromcard

Save your file. Click File | Save As from the menu at the top of the screen.

Enter a filename when prompted.

This steps makes the file permanent on the computer. This is not the file the radio will use.

FT-2D-FT1DOpen

Send the file to the SD Card.

Click Communication | Write to SD Card from the menu at the top of the screen.

The process will be completed automatically.

When this step is complete, remove the card and put it back in your radio.

Repeat steps 1 through 6 shown above with one change.

In Step 4 select Read from SD to program the radio.

You can leave the SD card in the radio for storage

Once the Read from SD process is complete or you can remove it for use elsewhere or store it in the radio for when you need to reprogram details.

The radio is finished with it.
