The microphone jack on the TH-F6/F7 radios have several functions. These include SP/Mic (for an external microphone and the default) / PC / TNC. Kenwood planned for all sorts of functions through that mic jack.
For the radio to connunicate with the computer for programming, this SP/Mic Jack option must be set to PC. That is Menu item #9, must be manually set from the face of the radio to "PC".

- Press the silver button to enter the Menu (this is a pretty nice button. Even if you press and hold it, it will go into the menu)
- Turn the knob on top of the radio or press the silver button up or down to advance through the menu items to Menu Item #9. (Note: when the item number is blinking, the item is only being displayed and not being edited.)
- Press the button again (the Menu item number ceases to blink and the option selection now blinks.)
- Turn the knob on top of the radio or press the silver button up or down to advance through the options for this menu item.
- When PC appears and is blinking, press the silver button to select. The option will cease to blink and the Menu Item number will again blink.
- Press the PTT to close the menu.
- Cycle the radio off and back on.
This will get you going and cease that annoying, no response from radio message.
