Speaker Performance on AT-5888UV III (and others)

This is what I learned about the Anytone AT-5888UV III radio today.  I know that it applies to many other models.  So if you problem is similar, investigate this first in  your model.

The AT-5888UV III has a speaker feature that allows you to direct the audio output to one or two speakers.   The problem involved less than sufficient volume on some of the channels.  In further investigation, it turned out that these channels were being heard only through the speaker on the radio and the radio body was mounted under the seat of the car... no wonder it could not be heard well!!   For the arrangement, it was necessary that all audio come through the external speaker that was mounted near the head of the radio.

Solution:

This feature is controlled in the software under Settings | Radio Menu Settings | Common | VHF Speaker Port (as indicated in the image from the programmer).  In the AT-5888 UV III it is menu item 52.

This feature is not quite as the label states.  I first looked at it and thought... VHF?? you mean only the 2meter signal goes out through the selected (internal or external) speaker???  Well no.  The output is not frequency dependent.  It is all based on the left and right sides of the display.

Here's how it works

  • Internal - ALL signals, left side AND right side, are heard through the speaker on the radio OR an external speaker when connected.  If the external speaker is removed, audio returns to the internal speaker.  Volume is controlled on left and right sides independently via the volume knobs for left and right at the lower left and right of the face (see indications 3 and 4 in the picture of the radio.)

  • External - Audio for the right side is heard through the external speaker.  Audio for the left side is heard through the internal speaker.  If the external speaker is removed, all audio returns to the internal speaker.

He made this change to his programming and now all is being heard loud and clear!!
