We recently had a customer write in to ask if there was a way to adjust the "My Menu" option in our software for the Yaesu VX-7. They pointed us towards page 82 of the radio's manual which mentions the feature and how to activate it using the radio's interface. Try as we might though, we could not get any of our three in-house VX-7s to go in to this "My Menu" mode.
After some research, we discovered that only older manuals for the VX-7 mention this feature. There is a blank on page 82 where the information used to exist when you look at a newer manual. Original VX-7 manuals have a copyright date of 2002 where a newer manual you might download from Yaesu's webpage today have a copyright date of 2007. This got us wondering if the feature actually exists in the radio, if it was removed at some point along the way, or if the old manuals were just plain wrong.
We eventually came to understand that the feature is somewhat "hidden" in the VX-7 and can only be activated via software modification of the radio. We are aware of certain third party software programs which claim to activate the feature but, so far, our testing with those programs has not been successful. We only tested with one of our three VX-7s since this action technically constitutes a software modification to the radio and we weren't willing to risk more than one of our units. The process may have worked with another of our units but we need these radios to remain in good working condition for testing purposes so we elected not to risk them.
Subsequent Yaesu radios do have the feature fully implemented. The VX-6 is a good example. The "My Memory" feature in that radio works as described in the radio's manual and the function is assignable in the RT Systems VX-6 programmer in the "Radio Menu Settings" interface. The same cannot be said for the VX-7.
Given our inability to activate the function in our own VX-7 and the fact that is necessitates a software modification to activate in the first place we have decided that it is not something RT Systems will support. We wanted to put the information out in the world in case any VX-7 owners are scratching their heads wondering how to make it work.
