Talk Group ID Requirements: TGIF and Brandmeister

Modified on Fri, Jan 23 at 3:19 PM

TGIF (Thank God It's Friday) is a popular phrase, but in digital radio networks like DMR, it's a specific network requiring unique 7-digit Talk Group IDs (TGs) starting with '5' (e.g., 5000101) to distinguish these from other systems like Brandmeister and avoid routing confusion by the system. The leading '5' acts as a network prefix. Padding zeros are used after the "5" to make it a standard 7-digit format for their systems.

Why the '5' and 7 Digits?

Network Differentiation: Digital radio networks (like Brandmeister, DMR+, TGIF) use Talk Group IDs (numbers). To keep them separate, each network gets a unique starting digit.

TGIF's Prefix: The number '5' was chosen as the network identifier for TGIF.

Padding for Uniformity: If a regular TGIF Talk Group ID (e.g., 101) is shorter than needed, zeros are added after the leading "5" to make a total of 7 digits (e.g., 5000101), ensuring consistency across the network.

Routing: Hotspot software (like Pi-Star or WPSD) uses these rewrite rules to translate the 7-digit TGIF number (like 5000101) into the correct format for the network.

So, the '5' identifies it as TGIF, and the total of 7 digits creates a unique, structured identifier for that specific digital radio network. Watch your formatting as you enter these into the Programmer to ensure successful connections and transmissions.
