FTM-500 Name Display

Modified on Mon, Dec 11, 2023 at 10:12 AM

Learned something new about the FTM-500 today.  The display will do wide spacing for the name characters.

With it on, it looks like this:

With it off, which is the standard, it looks like this:

This option is controlled on the radio via the A key at the bottom of the screen (next to the Caps) button.

Upper and lower characters are allowed in each: it's the spacing between the characters that changes and therefore, the number of characters you can enter:  In Wide mode, you only get 8 characters.  In regular mode you get 16.

You can even do a combination of wide and not wide.... from the face of the radio... but wait... you can do this in the programmer, too.  Just put spaces between the characters at any point in the name string you want... DUH.

If you set these from the face of the radio, you can edit the string in the programmer only if you use the manual entry of spaces.  What the programmer does in the latest update (08/22/2023) is preserve what you created on the face of the radio as long as you don't touch it in the programmer.

Names work just fine in the programmer.  The only difference is that the radio puts in the spaces automatically while in the programmer, use of the space bar is necessary.  As always, what you see is what you get.
