We were recently asked to add an option to enable/disable VOX via the programmer for the Yaesu FT-991/A radio. We thought that seemed reasonable, so we gave it a shot. When we tested the feature though, we discovered a bit of a problem.
In order to finalize the programming process you have to power cycle the radio- turn it off and then back on again- in order for the new programming data to show up. Unfortunately, when the radio powers back on it always seems to default to CW mode.
When the radio is in CW mode VOX is automatically turned off and the feature is actually globally disabled in the radio’s menu. It simply cannot be turned on which makes sense when you're operating CW.
Unfortunately though, this means that even if you send a file with VOX turned on to the radio it won’t matter. The radio will reboot in to CW mode, and VOX will be globally disabled. You'd then have to go turn it on manually through the function menu.
VOX in the 991/A seems to be a global setting and not a per-channel item so there is not a good way for us to work around this problem. As such, we will not be able to have VOX on/off functionality as a part of the radio programmer.
