Once the new window pops up, which can take a minute while loading all the preferences, make sure you are on the Key Func tab.

Forced Key Lock - Determines if the keys can be unlocked manually or not.

Keyboard Lock - Locks the keypad. If this function is enabled the Menu key, and then the * key needs to be clicked to unlock the keypad.

Knob Lock – Locks the knobs.

Side Key Lock - Locks the side (PF1, PF2 and PF3) buttons.

Key Lock - Determines if the keys will lock automatically or manually.

Long Key Time – Determines how long a key will need to be depressed to be considered a long key press.

Short Key -Determines the function of each key when the key is depressed for a short time.

Long Key - Determines the function of each key when the key is depressed for a long time. The amount of time the key needs to be depressed is based on the time you chose above for the long key time.

There are lots of options that can be set for each key.  As you learn the radio and its functions, you may want to adjust your settings for performance and convenience.

Shown here are all the options with a brief description of those we can identify. Not all options are available for short and long press. The list presented covers those available for each.

  • Off - No function is assigned to this switch
  • Voltage - Displays the voltage available from the battery. This is a good option to have engaged if you have plans for using your radio during an activity that keeps you busy for a long while.
  • Power - Resets the power level for the frequency in use.
  • Repeater - Turns Talkaround on and off. - Talkaround makes the radio Rx and Tx on Repeater output frequency. This lets you talk with someone close by without tying up the repeater while still hearing other transmissions through the repeater. If you can communicate with Talkaround engaged, you can move off to another simplex frequency.  This can be a dangerous option to engage especially with name and not frequency displayed (i.e., you can't see what frequency you are transmitting on).  You will lose communications through the repeater and not understand why.
  • Reverse - Reverses the Rx and Tx frequencies of the channel.  Having Reverse engaged is dangerous especially in conjunction with name display since you won't know what frequency you are transmitting on. You will lose communications through the repeater and not understand why,
  • Digital Encryption - Engage or disengage this function
  • Call - Does not work on a digital channel.
  • Vox - Engage or disengage the VOX function
  • V/M - Switch between VFO and Memory. This option is a good choice for general use of the radio.
  • Sub PTT - Transmits on the "sub" channel when in dual mode functionality.  The "sub" channel can be at the top or at the bottom. It is just the channel that is not currently the main channel.
  • Scan - Engage or disengage scanning. If you have set up Scan Lists that are attached to your memory channels, this option lets you start scanning.
  • FM - Engage or disengage FM radio. Enter your FM frequencies on the FM tab of the programmer settings.
  • Alarm - Trigger the alarm to sound with the press of this button. When selected, this is the only option that can be set for this button as a long press starts the alarm and a short press of the same button halts it.
  • Record Switch - Engage or disengage the record function.
  • Record - Starts a recording. Works only in digital mode.
  • SMS - Access SMS menu from which text messages can be sent.
  • Dial - Direct access to Manual Dial of Book in Main menu of the radio.  With one press you can enter up to 16 letters (A-D) and numbers (0-9) to be transmitted with your next transmission. This is a great way to send a DTMF string to access Echolink, IRLP or autopatch.
  • GPS Information - Display GPS information for your current location.
  • Monitor - While the button is held, squelch drops to zero to allow you to hear all signals.  This option is the only one that can be set on a button. The long option is not available when Monitor is selected for the button.
  • A/B Switch - Change operations from A Band to B Band. In dual display, this is between the top and bottom display of the radio.  Without dual display, the one display changes between Band A and Band B.
  • Hotkey 1-6 - Perform the function set for that Hot Key - Set the functions on the Hot Key tab of the settings in the Programmer. These keys can be set for many options that control analog and digital functions.
  • Work Alone - Engage and disengage the Work Alone function.
  • Nuisance Delete - Eliminate a channel from a scan group while in the field with this option.  Get that noisy channel out of the way immediately without having to reprogram. Make permanent changes to that scan list upon your return to base.
  • Digital Monitor - Engage or disengage Digital Monitoring. This is the option necessary to "scan" digital frequencies.  Set other options for this function on the Digital/Vox page of the settings of the programmer. This button only engaged and disengages the function. There are lots of other options to be set to get good use from this option.
  • Sub CH Switch - Turn sub-channel display off and on.
  • Priority Zone - Change to the assigned Priority Zone. The Priority Zone is set for Band A and Band B on the Other tab of the settings in the Programmer.
  • VFO Scan - Start and stop VFO scanning.
  • MIC Sound Quality - Turn option on to be able to select Indoor, Outdoor or Normal. While to setting for the button is retained when the radio is powered off, the mic enhancement selection is not.
  • LastCall Reply
  • Channel Type Switch - Toggle channel from analog to digital
  • Ranging -
  • Roaming - Start the roaming function
  • Channel Ranging - Engage or disengage Channel Ranging
  • Max Volume - Engage maximum volume from the radio by pressing this one button.
  • Slot Switch - Change the time slot for DMR transmission
  • APRS Type Switch - Change from analog to digital APRS signaling
  • Zone Select - Access selection of the zone via one button click.

  • TBST Send
  • Bluetooth - Engage of disengage the Bluetooth functionality
  • GPS - Engage or disengage GPS functionality
  • Ch Name - Toggle from name to frequency for a channel
  • CDT Scan
  • APRS Send
  • ANA APRS Info
