You may be getting a few errors while attempting to Get Data from your R1 handheld, but don't worry it's a simple fix.
You have the R1 programmer open, and you click on Communications | Get Data from radio and follow the onscreen instructions. Insert the USB cable into the Speaker/Mic jack on the side of the radio, turn the radio on and click OK (on the computer) to start transferring the data. Sometime during this process, you may see an error pop up on your computer screen that says USB device not recognized.
You may also see the following error pop up...
If you look in device manager after getting one or both of the above errors, then you should see Unknown USB Device (Device Descriptor Request Failed) next to a yellow warning symbol. This usually shows up under Universal Serial Bus controllers.
Now as I said at the beginning of this article this should be an easy fix, but we have had quite a few customers call in with this same issue so it's not uncommon for this to happen.
After seeing the above errors, while the radio is still powered on...and device manager open...unplug the USB cable from the radio. Now try plugging the cable into the radio, but this time push the cable in until you hear and feel a click. Once you have done so, the cable should appear in device manager as DMR Radio Device (as seen below).
Once you see the cable showing as this, you should not have any further issues. You may think the cable is plugged in all of the way, but a little extra push can make all the difference. Go back to your programmer screen and continue following the instructions to Get Data from Radio. Now the green progress bar should appear, and the data will be read from your Rugged R1 handheld.
