This radio has two zones of 16 each.
The original programmer automatically put channels 1-16 into Zone 1 and 17-32 into Zone 2. Worked well.
At some point, a change was made to make the radio work more as other radios with channels and zones (i.e., you can put the same channel in multiple zones and 2 you can put a higher number channel into Zone 1 if you want.)
Things to be aware of:
- The radio still have only 2 zones. To change zones, press and hold the top button (blue or orange) above the PTT. You will hear beeps indicating the change and the radio will announce the channel number.... NOT the knob number (i.e., if you put channel 4 in the first spot of the Zone and have the knob on the first spot, the radio will announce 4).
- The zones hold 16 channels. An unprogrammed channel will send a continuous beep if it is selected with the top knob. Be sure all 16 channels are programmed with something.
- Be sure that entered channels are put into Zones in the X version.
- I could not get the radios to talk to each other in DMR mode.
- Remember, if you are doing tones in FM on Simplex, have the same CTCSS and RX CTCSS or it will not work.
- Seems the older radio will always announce 1-2-3-4 for both zones while the newer one will announce the channel number as the knob on top is turned.
