So, you have learned enough about GMRS radios to know that they will talk to each other only if you are on the same channel (i.e., frequency) and have the same tone set.
The tones on the channels that are preset when you purchased the radio are not what you need. You want to be able to set the tone on the radio once you get up with your friends and find out what they are using or just use no tone at all.
This works on the GMR-2 IF you set the channels up properly. This will work for channels 0, 3,6,9,12,15,18,21,24,27,30,33 (etc in 3s.) The tone cannot be set on any of the other channels. It's just something in the design of the radio that we can work around.... but can't change.
These channels are already a part of the programming of the radio. You will see them labeled as 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 (with no -# following), but if you want to eliminate the ones with the tones from the programming file, you must be careful to leave the others in place. Use Clear Channel rather than Delete to clear the programming from the channels you don't want.
Your file will end up looking like this. The radio does not care about the blanks and when you see this on the radio you will not have to turn through the unprogrammed channels.
