Communications | Get data from radio. The first requirement for successful programming (but only the first time... not every time.)
For the IC-T81 radio, success in this process requires that the Sending Speed be set to Normal. Computers today just talk way too fast for this older model to keep up.
If data transfer between the radio and the computer fails with a Communication Timeout error, setting the sending speed to Normal is often the solution. This option is found in the programmer under Communications | Adjust Sending Speed.
This should get you going.
