The FT-2980 radio has a Channel Only Mode that changes several things about the radio making it more like a commercial radio. This is a good mode for the radio when it is to be used by someone unfamiliar with the model. Channel Only Mode will help keep the operator on the right channel and away from other functions.
In Channel Only Mode, the radio displays memory channels as name only. If a name is not entered for a channel and that channel set for Show Name, the radio defaults to B#### (where #### are four digits.)
The radio is put into Channel only mode by holding the [Set/MHz] button when powering it on. This can happen unexpectedly when the wrong button is pressed when engaging CLONE mode for programming.
To put the radio back into full operating mode, press and hold the [Set/MHz] button while powering it on. The radio will return to normal operation. Note: Even with this move, at times, I had to hold the [MW D/MR] key to regain all functionality. Unfortunately I could not establish a pattern for when this was needed. Surfice to say, if it is not working as you expect, try the other key during power on.

You have not hurt your radio. It can be returned to normal mode easily by holding the [Set/MHz] key during power on.
Keep experimenting. You're liable to learn lots of things about that radio.
